this is THE WORST experience I ever had in my career. I feel that Dan* lacks the necessary skills to effectively manage his work and the team:

  • Encouraging excessive working hours: During our recent one-on-one meeting, Dan* asked for feedback regarding other team members. I shared my belief that it’s essential for people to have designated time to rest, as it actually enhances overall work efficiency. To my surprise, he responded with, ‘Oh, so you don’t like challenges.’ Furthermore, whenever individuals mentioned working late into the night, he never discouraged it. On multiple occasions, including myself, when people left the company around 6-7pm and mentioned continuing work at home, he would encourage it by saying, ‘Same for me.’ This kind of behavior has caused significant stress among the entire team.
  • Disregard for privacy: When I informed him about my need to travel to my hometown due to a family member’s health issue, he immediately probed for intrusive details, such as who and how, seemingly as a strategy to delay or challenge my time-off request. This lack of respect for privacy 😡 undermines trust between the manager and the team.
  • Micromanagement: For instance, Dan* consistently asks me to provide overly detailed reports of my activities for the past two weeks during our one-on-one meetings, including specific tasks, bug fixes, and other granularities. The team has little time to focus on implementing and delivering work, as a significant amount of time is spent on inquiries and paperwork. This leads to low efficiency and hampers our ability to meet deadlines effectively.
